We believe children deserve an education. Children equipped with an education are less vulnerable to risk-taking behaviors. They stand a better chance of blooming into self-sufficient adults, contributing to the good of society. Yet millions of innocent children displaced by war are up against the odds – child labor, child marriage, trauma induced rage and depression. Even those in school receive rote learning that does not challenge them to think critically or creatively. That’s why at SAT-7, we offer complementary on-air schooling free to viewers, reflecting core Christian values in the lessons.
A child who can read is a child who can harness the life-changing truth of Scripture. “Our aim is not just to offer education, but to offer life! A chance to start again! We want to inspire them and equip them to feel that they can return and make a difference in their country,” says Juliana Sfeir, SAT-7 ACADEMY Manager in Lebanon. And feedback from the audience shows that’s exactly what’s happening.
A mother from Iraq says, “I couldn’t send my children to school because of the conditions in our country, but through My School I am helping them learn Arabic, English and French, and they are starting to learn math and science as well.”
Adults are also benefitting from the programs. A 38-year-old Algerian woman has contacted SAT-7 ACADEMY after almost every episode over the past year. Not having had an education, she watches the French lessons and is learning a new language.
Structured performance indicators are also positive. In 2017 the CHILD (Cultural Heritage and Interactive Learning Development) Center was launched in Lebanon as a one-year project to measure outcomes with trained teachers in a classroom of 64 four to six-year-olds. At the start, some students didn’t even know how to hold a pencil. Some wouldn’t speak their names as a result of trauma. After one year, 94 percent of these children with no prior knowledge had shown a 22 percent increase in knowledge of French, a 44 percent increase in knowledge of Arabic, and a 100 percent improvement in mathematics.
The 1.2 million children watching My School on SAT-7 KIDS also learn from the channel’s Bible teaching programs such as Bible Heroes, Bedtime Story, Super Book, and Family of Jesus.
SAT-7 CEO Rita El-Mounayer says, “We must invest in education that teaches not only knowledge but tolerance. If we do not, those who teach conflicting values will prevail. We have seen the consequences – radicalism, extremism, and insurgency. We need to act now.” Let’s change the world together.
For every dollar donated, a child receives a full year of complementary educational programs on SAT-7. Give to Middle East HOPE, and invest in a brighter future for the next generation of the Middle East and North Africa.
