HOPE IN THE MIDDLE EAST?
With some animosity and anger, she informed us that there is NO hope for the Middle East, especially Turkey! She said she left there years ago and will never go back even though her family lives there. She recently sold her properties in Turkey and encouraged her children never to visit. She was finished with her homeland!
We shared with her that there indeed is hope for Turkey, the hope of the Gospel that was so much a part of her country’s heritage. We told her that our guest speaker for the weekend had flown in from Turkey just to talk to us and encourage us of this hope.
She proceeded to highly warn us of his lies and that we should not believe what he would tell us. We told her that this man is a Christian and the director of a new Christian satellite TV channel that is serving Turks through hope in Jesus!
Suddenly, her demeanor changed and she softened. She kept saying “Really?” “Really?” She had no idea this was happening in her country. We showed her the SAT-7 TÜRK free smartphone app so she could watch live programs produced in Istanbul. Amazed, she kept holding her heart and saying “This is amazing. This gives me such hope for my country.”
A half hour later, she brought her husband by to meet us and hear this message of hope for Turkey. With tears in her eyes, she thanked us for bringing hope to her country. I had tears too, as I assured her that, YES, there is hope for them and their country of Turkey and the world! Her last words to us were “You have given me such hope!”
The story ended with a tearful, happy hug. But after they left, I kept thinking of other things I wished I had said. Her name is Selma and she needs a big dose of HOPE that only Jesus can provide. Pray that God will bring other Christians into Selma’s path to encourage her in the one true hope of Christ!
