Why support people in a region mired in violence, hatred, and war? Why care about people in countries so different from ours?
For the sake of women.
In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), an alarming number of women are treated as property, second class citizens, or worse. With limited to no basic human rights, women in many countries face violence and degradation. A reported 37% of women are victims of domestic violence; while, in Egypt, 99% of women experience sexual harassment on some level. Yearly, more than 5,000 women are murdered because they “dishonored” their families. Before the age of 18, an estimated 1 in every 5 girls are pushed into arranged marriages to much older men, leaving them in impossible situations. With no way out of abusive relationships, many of the women living in the MENA are left feeling hopeless. Yet, through SAT-7 programming, we hope to change these statistics.
SAT-7 programs, like Moustache and Men’s Talk, teach men valuable lessons about, for example, how women should be treated and the roles men should play in society. Other programs, such as Because I am a Woman, are dedicated to bringing to light the issues women face, issues that affect individuals like Elmira. Watch her story and see how SAT-7 changed her life.
So why now? Why the Middle East and North Africa? For women like Elmira, whose only hope is found in the Words of Christ on SAT-7 programming.
