“Greater Works”– What Does This Mean?

14th February 2025

In John 14:12, Jesus makes a remarkable statement: “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in Me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will He do, because I am going to the Father.”

This promise has sparked deep reflection among believers, raising the question: What does Jesus mean by “greater works”? Let’s consider several ways to answer that question.

1. Greater in Extent or Scope. During His earthly ministry, Jesus was physically present in one place at a time. However, after His ascension, the Gospel spread beyond the borders of Israel to the entire world. Today, through media ministries like SAT-7, the message of Christ reaches millions in the Middle East and North Africa – places Jesus never physically traveled. His followers, empowered by His promise, are now carrying the Gospel to every nation.

2. Greater in Number. Jesus performed many miracles, even though His earthly ministry lasted only a few years. The early Church, fueled by the Holy Spirit, multiplied these works exponentially. Today, the number of believers sharing the Gospel, discipling nations, and demonstrating Christ’s love is greater than ever. Every time a new believer comes to faith, every time a church is planted, and every time a SAT-7 broadcast reaches into a home, the “greater works” continue.

3. Greater in Spiritual Impact. Jesus healed the sick and raised the dead, but His greatest work was the salvation He secured through His death and resurrection. While His miracles were powerful, they were temporary; those healed would still eventually face death. However, the Church now carries the message of eternal life through Christ. Every transformed heart, every restored family, and every persecuted believer who stands firm in faith is evidence of a spiritual impact that echoes into eternity.

4. Empowered by the Holy Spirit. Jesus’ promise is directly linked to the coming of the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost, the disciples were filled with power, enabling them to preach boldly, perform miracles, and build the Church. Today, that same Spirit empowers us to continue Christ’s mission – whether through personal evangelism, digital outreach, or compassionate service. The “greater works” are not accomplished by human effort, but through the Spirit working in and through us.

In looking at Jesus’ words in John 14:12, we recognize they are not just a promise but a call to action. Today, the Gospel is reaching further, touching more lives, and transforming hearts in ways never imagined… and you are part of this unfolding mission of using media to proclaim the Gospel across borders where traditional methods are more dangerous and often less effective. This is the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise, so thank you for your partnership in ministry. I hope you see that through every broadcast, every testimony, and every life changed, the “greater works” are happening now, and you play a part in making that happen. Praise the Lord!
